A Year of Kindness

We share monthly community challenges each month with a suggested act of service and provide the tools and resources for youth to identify their project, plan, and execute - culminating in 12 months of service and kindness for their community!

  • January

Serve a pancake breakfast for your neighbors, church, or community. Include a recipe and DIY on how to make pancakes in bulk! Shopping list for cups, juice, coffee, utensils, condiments, etc. Ideas on where to rent or borrow tables. How to decorate DIY inexpensive tablecloths. Ways to invite your community. Timeframe for how to plan, set up, execute, host, end, and clean-up.

  • February

Serve a meal to someone going through a challenging time. How to help identify someone in your community who just had a death in the family, had a new baby, moved homes, etc. How to respectfully and efficiently make a meal or helpful service to do for them.

  • March

Invite your parish priest to a dinner planned, cooked, and served by a group of youth. Include directions on how to respectfully invite, where to host, what to serve, how to shop, how to cook and serve, conversation starters, and how to clean-up.

  • April

Offer an enrichment class for those in need in your community. Maybe a music class for new/single moms and their babies hosted and planned by youth members. A movie night to babysit young ones while offering parents of young children a ‘date night’ on the same property.

  • May

Clean and improve your parish yard, clean the church, paint the parish hall, decorate the alter for a special holiday. Plant a flower bed, donate a bench, find something to improve the legacy of your church or community.

  • June

Give time or thoughtful gifts to a child going through a medical treatment and their family. Make a basket of legos or puzzles to pass time while going through treatment. Make siblings bags and give Starbucks cards for parents or caregivers.

  • July

Identify an elderly person in your community living alone. Offer to bring them groceries, mow their lawn, take out the trash, find an adult to make repairs on their home, bring them a meal, or offer companionship by visiting with them.

  • August

Donate your time by teaching a child a skill that you have. How to saddle a horse, how to bake a cake, how to shoot a basketball, etc.

  • September

Organize a book drive. Volunteer at your library and create flyers to advertise your event. Research organizations to donate the books you collect.

  • October

Host a warm coat drive. Create flyers advertising your event. Plan drop-off and pick-up spots. Research organizations to donate coats that are collected.

  • November

Show kindness to veterans. Volunteer to help with chores or tasks. Write thank you notes. Host a food or supply drive.

  • December

Donate your time by shoveling your neighbor’s snow off of their driveway, walkway or car. Shovel public sidewalks and make sure that wheelchair ramps are accessible.
